On 2 June 1944 'X23' together with 'X20' left Portsmouth for the mouth of the River Orne. She was towed across the channel by the trawler 'Sapper' until close enough to the French coast to make her own way. On 4 June they were in position to mark the landing beaches. The following morning D-Day was put back 24 hours. Most of the time when not charging the batteries was spent on the bottom. Just before 0500 on 6 June the beacon was flashing as a marker for the approaching landing craft. 'X23' then withdrew and headed for 'Largs'. Operation Gambit had been completed.
